For over a thousand years, Al-Azhar has stood as a beacon of Islamic learning, and for over a century, Cairo University has been a source of Egypt’s advancement. Together, you represent the harmony between tradition and progress. I am grateful for your hospitality, and the hospitality of the people of Egypt. Bolivia-USA, Three Sports, Two Peoples, One Healthy LifeWithin the program entitled 3 Sports, 2 Peoples, 1 Healthy Life, an enthusiastic group of over 60 officers of the U.S. Embassy in La Paz led by the Chargé d’Affaires Kris Urs, went on a 100-mile bike and soccer trip from Potosí to Sucre on May 11-12. The group of Bolivians and Americans who participated in this initiative stopped in two towns during the trip, in Betanzos (Potosi) and Yotala (Chuquisaca) where they played two friendly soccer matches with local teams. Famous speech delivered at dedication of Soldiers' National Cemetery President Abraham LincolnAbraham Lincoln, America’s 16th president, delivered his most famous speech — the Gettysburg Address — 145 years ago, on November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. America was still in the throes of a civil war. Four months earlier, at the beginning of July, some 51,000 Confederate and Union soldiers had been captured, wounded or killed in the Battle of Gettysburg. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 and was the 16th President of the United States of America. As ,President he led the Union to victory in the American Civil War, and abolished slavery. He was assassinated on April 1865. This year, we celebrate the bicentennial of the birth of this important icon in American history. USAID, institution of the yearUSAID is La Paz daily El Diario's “Institution of the Year for its valuable cooperation to the country.” For the second consecutive time, USAID has received El Diario’s “Golden Page" award. The story of this inspiring award was on the front page of El Diario December 31st, with a large photo of USAID Acting Director Peter Natiello and the editor of El Diario, Jorge Carrasco. “This award greatly motivates us,” said Natiello. “I am going to dedicate it to USAID’s personnel, to individuals like coffee producer Zenobia Charca and to the Bolivians who have betted on a better future.”
USAID project in Chuquisaca to Improve HousingU.S. Embassy’s Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Christopher Lambert officially hands over 446 improved houses to combat Chagas disease in Icla municipality, in the department of Chuquisaca. This program, funded by the U.S. Government, remodeled rural homes, including new roofs, walls, and floors. It also built non-polluting ovens and cement latrines. The program also provided training in procedures to prevent Chagas’ disease and to improve the hygienic conditions in the houses. As a result of the program, the risks faced by residents of suffering from other diseases such as pneumonia and diarrhea also decreased. USAID’s overall assistance to Chuquisaca has been estimated at $11.7 million for the period 2007-2008. (more...)
